If you are new to sailing or the Cedar Lake Yacht Club, you are in the right place. We are excited to have you join us in the fun and if you have any questions, we are all happy to talk with you. You do not need to be a member to be a part of any of our beginning programs and boats are provided.
Our sailing school is primarily designed for sailors between the ages of 6-16 and is sailed in a variety of boats (Optimist, X Boat, 420).
It is really important to start your sailor out in the right class so they have the best experience possible.
X Boat - All of our sailing camps use this boat. It is 16 feet long and vary stable. The increased size allows us to have an instructor onboard with one or two sailors. This helps new sailors feel safe while learning what it feels like to be out on the water sailing. Sailors of all ages and sizes are appropriate for this boat.
Optimist (Opti) - Young sailors can also start out in an Optimist. This is designed for smaller sailors (up to 120 lbs) and is normally sailed by one person. In our beginner classes they often sail with two. This is a great boat for young sailors who are more independent and feel comfortable on the water already. Normally, you would have taken one of our sailing camps prior to getting into the beginner Optimist classes. Most of the sailors are between the ages of 6-12 years old.
420 - If your child is between 12-16 years old, or over 90 lbs, the 420 is probably a good fit for your sailor. It is a great training boat that is used world wide for young sailors. If you child enjoyed a sailing camp and is looking for something more, this is probably the right fit for them.
